Old Legacy: A Classic MTG Format
Old Legacy is a custom Magic: The Gathering format that preserves the spirit of Legacy while removing outside IPs, and marketing-first designs. It’s designed for eternal-minded players who want depth and no distractions (and keep the number of sets-per-year to a reasonable amount).
Core Rules
- 60+ cards format
- Uses the official Legacy banlist.
Allowed Sets
You may use cards from:
- Any Standard-legal set (past or present)
- Conspiracy and Conspiracy: Take the Crown
- Any reprint of an already legal card, regardless of set
The following are not legal (unless a reprint of a legacy-legal card):
- Universes Beyond cards (unless reprinted as Universe Within)
- Secret Lair unique cards (non-reprint cards)
- Modern Horizons sets (MH1, MH2, etc.)
- Commander decks and Commander Masters original cards
- Jumpstart-exclusive cards, unless reprinted in Standard
- Alchemy, Unstable, Unfinity, or anything silver-bordered or acorn-stamped
Rule of thumb: If it didn’t premiere in Standard, Legacy, or Vintage, it’s not legal.
Philosophy
"If it wasn’t built for Legacy, it shouldn’t be in Legacy."
How is this different from Premodern?
Premodern is a closed, historical format focused on a specific time period (4th Edition to Scourge). Old Legacy is an open, evolving Eternal format that includes newer cards, as long as they respect Magic’s original spirit and release philosophy.
Old Legacy protects the core of Magic: eternal play, minimal gimmicks, and maximum skill expression.
